An acronym for Product-Oriented Environmental Management Systems. This is a new tool that combines the highly flexible features of traditional environmental management systems for processes (such as ISO 14001) and those of environmental labelling systems (Ecolabel, EPD, etc.) for products. POEMS aims to extend the concept of continuous improvement – an aspect that traditional environmental management systems largely confine to the environmental impact of the production phase – to the product’s entire life cycle, to include raw material extraction, distribution, use and disposal of the product. POEMS systems are developed by ENEA in collaboration with other partners within the context of the LAIPP project.
